Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why is your blog named “c.w.frosting”?
A: C & W for my first and middle initials. Caroline Wingsy. Wingsy is my Chinese name, the English spelling for two characters meaning “singing poem”.
This space is a collection of my creative, do-it-myself endeavors to accessorize my life — from wardrobe to apartment. I think of these accessories as “frosting”, the little final touch that can make anything so much better.
Q: Why did you start blogging?
A: This blog was established in June 2010, during an interesting life transition. I had just finished graduate school and was beginning my clinical training in medical school.
At the time, I envisioned my life would be consumed by long days in the hospital and long hours cramming my brain full of medical facts.
I wanted to establish a web space both to hold myself accountable to being creative and to record my creative efforts. As my now husband affectionately put it, “you’re going to have a blog about stuff you make.” Since graduate school was a lot of writing up instructions for experiments, it was easy to start blogging in a tutorial format.
This blog continued to be my creative outlet.
Q: How did you come up with the idea for that project?
A: Having been trained as a scientist, I see the web as a wonderful resource full of accessorizing “experiments”, all laid out in the form of photographs. I draw my style from viewing as many of these experiments as possible, then deciding on the styles I’d like to combine and emulate.
I started blogging before Pinterest became popular, so I my inspiration came from larger blogs like Design Sponge & Apartment Therapy. As I discovered more personal blogs, I began to draw a more DIY-based inspiration.
Q: What kind of camera do you use?
A: Many tutorial photographs are taken with my iPhone.
Prior to 2014: Nikon D3000 with stock lens & AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, here.
2014 Onward: Nikon D5300 with stock lens & AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D, here.
Q: What do you for work?
A: I’m a doctor, currently still in training as a resident in Ophthalmology.
Q (usually asked after above question): How do you have time to blog?
A: I don’t! I have been blogging in cycles when I have extra time. Currently, the social media venue I’m keeping up with most regularly is Instagram, here.
Q: Where did you learn how to add “that” feature to your blog, or make “that” look the way it does?
A: I learned basic html during college. When I started blogging, I found that you can figure most things out by google search.
If you have a specific question about a particular design element of my blog, please email me directly, here. While I don’t have time to respond to each & every comment, I try my best to answer all email questions.
Q: Are you available for personal blog design work?
A: No, unfortunately I do not have time to do personalized work. I am ALWAYS flattered when readers ask. If this changes, I will update this answer & the design.lab resource page, here.
